A UAE Tax Registration Number (TRN) is the identification number issued by the Federal Tax Authority after a tax registration is approved. A VAT TRN is 15 digits and is used on VAT certificates, tax invoices, returns and FTA correspondence. It is not the same as a trade-licence number, Tax Identification Number or application reference.
What does TRN mean in the UAE?
TRN means Tax Registration Number. It connects a registered person to its tax account and filings with the Federal Tax Authority. For VAT, the number identifies the registrant that charges and accounts for VAT; it should correspond to the legal person or tax group named on the registration certificate.
A TRN proves that a registration number has been issued, but it does not by itself prove that every invoice is valid or that every transaction has the correct VAT treatment. Businesses must still review the supplier, document, supply and recovery conditions.
What does a UAE VAT TRN look like?
A UAE VAT TRN contains 15 digits. Accounting systems should store it as an identifier rather than a mathematical number so that its complete sequence is preserved. Staff should avoid spaces, missing digits, copied punctuation and transposed numbers when entering it.
| Reference | Purpose | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| VAT TRN | Identifies the VAT registrant | Trade-licence number |
| Tax Identification Number | May identify a profile or person before/alongside registration | Proof of approved VAT registration |
| SRN/application reference | Tracks a submitted request | The approved TRN |
| Invoice number | Identifies one supplier document | The supplier’s tax identity |
Where should a VAT TRN appear?
The TRN is commonly shown on the VAT registration certificate, tax invoices and credit notes, VAT returns, refund applications and FTA correspondence. A business should use the approved number consistently across invoicing, accounting software and compliance files.
- match the TRN to the correct legal entity or VAT group;
- place the supplier and customer information in the correct invoice fields;
- avoid using a branch or related company’s number without confirming the registration structure;
- update master data when the FTA approves a registration amendment;
- retain the registration certificate with the tax-control file.
How does a business obtain a TRN?
A business receives a TRN after the FTA approves the relevant registration. For VAT, first determine whether mandatory or voluntary registration conditions are met, create the taxable-person profile in EmaraTax, submit the application and respond to any information requests. See the new-company VAT registration process and the UAE registration threshold guide.
Why should businesses check supplier TRNs?
A mistyped, inactive or unrelated number creates an evidence problem. Accounts-payable controls should compare the supplier’s legal name and TRN with the invoice and the official FTA result, then retain the check where the amount or risk justifies it.
Use the process in the UAE TRN verification guide. A successful number check supports identity validation; it does not replace review of the tax invoice, business purpose or input-tax recovery conditions.
What TRN mistakes should a UAE business avoid?
- treating an application reference as an approved TRN;
- copying the TRN of a related company;
- accepting fewer or more than 15 digits for a VAT TRN;
- entering the buyer’s TRN in the supplier field;
- assuming a valid TRN makes an incomplete invoice acceptable;
- failing to update accounting and invoice templates after an approved change.
How should the TRN be controlled internally?
Keep one approved supplier/customer master record, restrict edits to authorised users and record the evidence used for each change. Where a business operates several entities, add the legal name and licence details beside the TRN so staff select the correct profile. Periodically sample high-value or newly onboarded suppliers for verification.

No. A VAT TRN is issued after the business applies and the Federal Tax Authority approves its VAT registration.
